The Water supply situation of the project area and problem statement

The target Woreda is known for serious drinking water shortage and due to the lack of appropriate water sources in the locality where villagers reside. The recurrent drought has further aggravated the situation.  Water scarcity is common in the Woreda and highly worsened in the target Kebele. According to our recent rapid assessment result, some families have withdrawn their children from schools to help their family particularly in fetching water from very distant sources. Given the existing situation, the community of the target Kebele uses water for drinking from water sources such as river water, traditional wells. Appropriate sanitation and hygiene practices are not practiced in the area. Lack of clean water for sanitation and domestic use and absence of household toilet facilities have also aggravated the problem of water shortage in the Woreda and particularly in the target PA. Sanitation coverage and community awareness on proper utilization of sanitation facilities are very low, calling for intervention.

ECC-SDCO, A. A is currently implementing an Emergency Response Project in BossetWoreda with various components including a water supply and sanitation component. The water supply component of the emergency project is addressing the drinking water problems of the neighborhood kebeles but not the targeted kebele of SARA ARADA. The water supply scheme uses a borehole with a 100 m3 water reservoir and has adequate capacity to reach the other villages in the area that do not have access to clean potable water.

Therefore, this project has been designed and proposed to extend the water supply to three villages in Sara Arada from the Emergency Response and Rehabilitation Project /water supply scheme component.

This extension project will create access to 200 households in the targeted kebele of Sara Arada. 3 km water supply line will be laid, 3 water distribution points ( fountains), and 1 cattle trough will be constructed. In addition to this, the targeted community will be organized in water user committees and appropriate training will be given. General awareness creation and education on sanitation hygiene will also be given to the targeted community members.

The objective of the project.

General Objective: To contribute to improving safe potable water access and mitigate sanitation and hygiene problems in the targeted area.

Specific Objectives (SO):

SO-1: To improve access to potable water supply for 200 households by extending the water supply line from the nearby water supply line.

SO-2: To enhance the health status of those target households by offering training and education  on hygiene and sanitation practices

Beneficiaries

The proposed interventions of this project are expected to directly benefit 200 households, 1000 community members) who are the most vulnerable, poor, and water insecure community members including women and youth groups. The target groups are selected due to the fact they are lack access to clean potable water and are socially and economically affected by the problem of access to clean water. They are poor because they possess small assets and they are illiterate and their awareness level on important issues such as HIV/AIDS, improved hygienic practices, environmental protection, and sanitation, etc. is very low. Hence, it is necessary to provide some external sustenance support in the form of technical, material, and capacity building support which would enable them to tackle the existing problem and lead a better life.

Expected Results

Result-1: Target population will have improved access to safe and clean water

Result-2: the target groups have improved health status and have a better awareness of personal hygiene and environmental sanitation issues.

Results Indicators

Indicators for Result 1:

The target HH farmers get access to clean water (25 liters per day per person GTP-II standard of the government) by the end of the project period.

Indicators for Result 2:

The target groups have raised their level of awareness on basic WASH approaches and techniques and implement basic hygienic and sanitation facilities at household levels
