Water and sanitation are fundamental to human life. Potable water is an absolute necessity for life and adequate sanitation contributes to a tolerable life situation. In addition, clean water and sanitation hinder the occurrence of life-threatening diseases like diarrhea, intestinal worms, typhoid, cholera, etc. Today it is only 42 percent of the rural population of Ethiopia who has access to the potable water supply. Hence, most rural families of the Harari region have no access to a safe and potable water supply.  

As part of its unceasing effort in solving potable water supply for majorities of the rural peoples of the country, with the fund obtained from Stream of Hope Inc. as a continuous partnership with DoW. DoW has been implemented one clean water supply project and integrated with hygiene and sanitation for the underprivileged community Dere Teyara woreda of Harari Region. Overall, the completed project started to serve more than 500 people in the near vicinity.

The goal of the Project: 

The goal of this project is to contribute to improved health and well-being of the target community family members especially women, children, and elders of the Genda Ali community, Dere-Teyara woreda, Harari region by building one hand-dug well water supply project.  

Project Objectives/outcomes 

  • The incidence of water-borne diseases reduced    
  • Hygiene and sanitation-related diseases reduced  
  • Traveling and waiting time of fetching water is reduced.  
  • Children’s particularly girls’ enrollment improved 

Project Outputs 

  • One new hand-dug well is constructed 
  • The distance to improved water sources is less than 1km. 
  • Queuing time to fetch water is reduced 
  • Consumption of water at the household level is 20 liters per day is ensured
  • One WASHCo committee is established 

 

In order to achieve a national health target and specifically this project’s goal, DoW aims to better safe water access in the target areas. Since safe water access is the main gateway for proper WASH behavior and to bring better health outcomes to the community; Stream of Inc. will provide sustainable access to safe water through the construction of water wells.  

With the above-listed intervention, DoW will address the most immediate causes of the community’s poor Water and sanitation access and hygiene practice. With collaboration and generous contribution of Stream of Hope, community’s active engagement, Sector government offices, and having sufficient resources, these interventions will successfully bring better safe water access service and health gains for the selected beneficiaries.
