The Abret water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion Project implementation were planned to give access to safe and adequate water supply systems in Gurage zone,Cheha woreda three Villages, The target areas are Villages in One Kebele of Cheha Woreda, namely Yegbrar, Tach Eketer and Laye Eketer. The total population of the targeted area at present is 1200 (580Male and 620Female).
By utilizing the local manpower and resources, the community was able to help save some money from the original projects and built one additional project in the nearby village which brought the total to Four villages with a total population of 1,500.
The Abret water supply extension project was completed in 2013. The project was implemented with the active and full participation of the targeted beneficiary communities and all the concerned stakeholders to achieve the intended project objectives. The following major activities were taking place during the implementation of the projects.
- Installation of 3.7 k.m. long pipe with the necessary fitting, Construction of four water points (three with six faucets and one with two faucets) Additional 350 people have benefitted from additional works of one water point with 700 meters of the pipeline.
- Capacity Building Training for water Committee
- Mobilization of the community in all steps of the project implementation like a pipe
Trench excavation and backfilling, fence construction for the constructed water points and any other labor-intensive activates.
A community-based water management committee was organized, and it was provided with necessary training. The 3 days long training covered issues such as proper water scheme handling, financial & property management, improved hygiene, and sanitation & identifying plumbing materials. One water point has 7 Committee two of them are Caretaker (fee Collector and Tape attendant) and the others are management bodies.
After full system completed celebration was made with the presence of a representative of Donor Partners ‘’Stream of Hope Inc.’’, Concerned Government Sector and Emcs Staff management and professional’s team.
Project implementation duration was less than Four Months. This was due to the incredible collaboration of the community, commitment of project staff, and commitment of Stream of Hope Inc. by sending the financial input at once on time.
These projects were implemented with the collaboration of the Emdibir Catholic Secretariat – Social and Development Coordination Office (EmCS-SDCO)
- As a result of these projects, safe, adequate, and reliable potable water was available at
reasonable distances and 15 liters per capita per day are being consumed regularly by 1550
people (740 men and 810 women) in the target area for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. - Daily workload and time spent on fetching water reduced and girls/women students in the
the target area can fetch water within 15 minutes. - 1550 people have access and use improved sanitation facilities and practice safer personal
hygiene activities. - The communities are able to manage the water scheme independently and about 50% of the
committee members are women and use the acquired capacity to better manage the water
scheme.
